One Way to Actually Change

My wife and I just got done watching the finale of Ted Lasso. We have really enjoyed the develop of characters and the deeper themes than are typically present in today’s television of action and superficial humor.

Of note, there was a ripe scene with the hardened character of Roy Kent. His battle throughout the show has been one of not letting people get to him. Of trying to maintain a shell, while everyone around him knows there’s a tenderness to him that he reserves. Better. That he doesn’t know how to tap into.

Near the end of the episode, Roy finally asks to be a member of the vulnerable and in-need-of-help “Diamond Dogs”—an ad hoc group of guys who seek counsel for things that are unsure of.

The entire dialogue is probing and revealing. It is worth watching (and in case you don’t know, Roy has a very limited vocabulary consisting of f-bombs and stuff), but I trust you’re old enough to understand and mature enough to let people say foul language):

So how do we change? We admit that we need to change. This isn’t the hardest part, but it is requisite to actual change. Most people acknowledge that they aren’t where they want to be and they are how they want to be. The hardest part is pinpointing what you want to change. “I want to get up earlier.” “I want to stop yelling.” “I want to stop worrying.” The next movement is to then get someone in your life who you give the permission to speak into your life.

This is the one way to actually change.

Have someone or a few people you give permission to to call you out.

I have interacted with many people who acknowledge they want to change. That they need to change. But they never give permission to people to speak truth to them. They never give that person permission to hold them accountable to the better version of themselves.

They get stuck in the “I know I need to…” trap.

I know I need to get my foot out of this bear trap…

Ask someone to help you…and LET THEM HELP YOU.

I would be happy to help you. If you want a coach who will help you become a better version of yourself, rather than merely give you a checklist of things to do…but to really consider the kind of person you want to be in mind, body, and soul. Lemme know!

In fact, you can jumpstart that movement toward change with a FREE My New Rich Life Workbook I put together from my coaching program simply to help you and to get a taste of what a fuller personal and business coaching relationship would look like with me.
